DHA Architects were commissioned in 2015 to undertake a long-term refurbishment programme of this 1980's care home to improve the quality of nursing care provision in line with Care Quality Commission requirements. The primary aim of the refurbishment works is to increase the space standings within the existing care bedrooms and associated en-suites to enable 2/3 care staff to utilise the mechanical hoist lifting equipment required by the increased average age and mobility impairement of residents.
The refurbishment has been carried out on a phased basis, involving the shut down and isolation of one ward at a time. In order to create larger bedrooms and en-suite facilities, the overall number of nursing rooms has been reduced.
Works are ongoing and have so far comprised the complete refurbishment of the majority of the building, including chapel with the re-building of one of the nursing wings to provide an element of purpose-built "Independent Living" apartments currently nearing completion.
The project has included the provision of new mechanical and electrical services alongside the enlarging of bedroom and en-suite accomodation with the provision of further communal spaces to foster resident inclusivity.
DHAA's refurbishment scheme has achieved an "Outstanding" Care Quality Commission rating.
