CURATED CONSERVATION @ PARNHAM PARK

Client: Parnham Estates Ltd
Location: Parnham Park, Dorset

DHA are excited to be involved in the conservation and restoration of Parnham Park, a Grade I listed stately home which has been on the England's Heritage at Risk register since a sevestating fire in 2017.

A Planning and Listed Building application has recently been submitted which, if approved, will see this exceptionally important building conserved and restored, with some of the most fire-damaged parts of the building creatively re-imagined through new architectural interventions.

Works will involve conserving as much of the existing fabric as possible with re-instatement of lost elements performed using materials and construction detailing typical of the era originally constructed and in some circumstances supplemented, where appropriate, using modern methods:

- Re-instating the existing internal floors and roof areas;

- Conserving and repairing the external envelope, including masonry and external door and window repairs;

- Internal repairs and fit-out to varying scope levels to create reception spaces and guest accomodation;

- Installation of steel framing to support fire-damaged masonry external walls where necessary;

- Installation of contemporary glazing and flat roof to the severely fire-damaged East elevation of John Nash's Dining Room;

- Upgrading the thermal performance of the existing floor and external walls where possible and insulating the new roof areas, all using natural and breathable systems in line with heritage best practice.

The costs associated with saving and protecting the house are substantial, so DHA Architects have worked with an experienced consultant team to present a scheme of enabling development in the nearby Grade II listed registered park and garden, designed to address the viability gap and raise the funds necessary to carry out the restoration.

The development consists of 82 bespoke houses, together with on-site leisure facilities and two guest accommodation lodges, which have been designed to respond sensitively to its context and to create a unique design-led community on the estate which benefits from the richness of the landscape in which it is situated.
