For almost 160 years, the Little Sisters of the Poor have cared for the elderly poor in Leeds. The redevelopment of Mount St Joseph's continues this tradition through the creation of a new, purpose-built home that combines compassion, dignity and contemporary design.
The new sheltered extra-care and supported living scheme replaces the original 1970's building, which could no longer meet modern safety and care standards. Designed within the historic conservation setting, the new buildings are shaped to harmonise with their surroundings while providing a modern, uplifting environment for residents and the community.
Key features include:
- A central hub with bistro, lounges, salon and shared meeting spaces to encourage social connection and wellbeing
- Private apartments offering independence with 24 hour support
- A convent wing for the Sisters, including an oratory, refectory and common areas
- A chapel for 60 people, forming the spiritual heart of the community
- Sustainable, low-carbon design using traditional masonry, natural materials and supplementary low or zero carbon technologies
- Landscaped gardens enhancing bio-diversity, accessibility and the site's tranquil setting
This development reflects the Sister's belief that good design can enrich lives - creating a lasting legacy that serves both residents and the wider community in Leeds with warmth, care and respect.
The scheme is currently in for full planning approval with Leeds Council.
