REFURBISHMENT + EXTENSION @ ST TERESA'S

Client: Parish of St Teresa of the Child Jesus
Location: Stoke on Trent

This commission required DHA Architects to re-order, refurbish and extend the existing Church to create an atmosphere which was warm, well lit and welcoming to foster a greater sense of the full and active participation of the entire assembly.

The practice was challenged to provide a space which would enable the greater fostering of prayer to reflect the holiness of the sacred mysteries. An integral part of which was the creation of an integral place for children's liturgy.

Responding to these desires, DHA Architects proposed a bold and fluid architectural aesthetic by removing the side aisle arches to unify the interior spaces and introduced a curvaceous new ceiling focusing the newly established volume on the new centrally placed Sanctuary. A bright and stimulating colour scheme with feature lighting have also helped transform the Church ino a joyous and inclusive space.

A new Narthex structure provides a welcoming entrance to the refurbished Church as well as providing disabled toilet facilities and a level threshold access for those with reduced mobility.

The rear of the Church has been partitioned off with a glazed hardwood screen, providing childrens liturgy and meeting facilities.
