COMMUNITY INTEGRATION @ ST LUKE'S

Client: St Luke and St Peter's Parish
Location: Portsmouth

DHA Architects were appointed to carry out a feasibility study to unlock the potential of this Grade II Listed Church. The key aspirations of the project were:

- To create greater visibility of the Church within the wider urban setting

- To maximise the Church space but in a way which reflects variations in congregation numbers

- To create multi-functional and teaching spaces which enable further integration with the adjacent Charter Academy

- To create flexible community space

Based on the brief, the practice developed a sketch proposal for 2 side extensions with a new street access fronting the adjacent road, directly linking the Church with the wider context and housing new education and community spaces. A re-modelling of the internal narthex and side aisle layout the created opportunities for sub-dividing the main worship space and providing accessbile WC's and additional Church storage and Sacristy spaces.

As part of the process, DHA Architects worked closely with all stakeholders, including holding design workshops with parishioners and school children.
